Help! Someone Filed Bankruptcy In My Name Without My Knowing. What Do I Do?

Imagine if someone filed bankruptcy in your name without your knowledge.  Well that happened to the person in the attached story.  In his case, Mr. Azibo had to hire an attorney to get his case expunged so it doesn’t remain on his record.  But how can you protect yourself from these situations?

One thing I do is to regularly check my credit report.  Most people know that you can request one free credit report each year from www.annualcreditreport.com, but did you know that you can actually get three per year?  What I do is spread the reports out amongst the big three.  I schedule a request from Equifax in January; Experian in May and Transunion in September.  Although this may not stop fraud, it does help by allowing you to find out if there is any fraud being committed in your name much sooner than the person in this story.
